Review – Hello Fresh - Meal Deliveries

“Hello Fresh” is the third of the Meal Delivery services we tried.

Ordering

Online ordering is similar to other services. Very easy to accept the suggested meals and relatively easy to change them. The variety was fine; we could select weekly beef, pork, and chicken meals.

Health

I like that the front of the recipe card shows the number of calories for the meal. Finding the number of carbs and net carbs requires diving into the website.

Receipt

I particularly liked that all of the items for a particular meal were in the bag for that meal. (Some other services had the fresh produce loosely in the big box.)

The recipe cards for several of the items were missing. Going back online, finding the item in my received items, and printing the recipe instructions was frustrating, especially when the Hello Fresh website didn’t know our package was delivered until several hours after I received it and was looking for the recipes.

Quality

All of the fresh items were fresh. We tossed nothing for being spoiled or otherwise unusable.

Preparation

I found it easy to miss steps following the Hello Fresh recipe cards. I misread the cards twice and ended up with less than perfect meals. The meals did take about as long as stated – 20 to 45 minutes.

Taste

The “Pork Chili’ n’ Cheese Stuffed Peppers” was a hit with us. Very tasty. Even my wife loved it, and she doesn’t usually care for many Mexican-inspired foods. Both of the pasta dishes we had needed more sauce.

Portions

We never left the table hungry. We had leftovers from a couple of the meals. We thought there was a good balance between carbs and proteins.

Sustainability

The shipping box was similar to other services. Hello Fresh seemed to have fewer of the little bags of things (sauces, spices, etc.) that were recyclable at “store dropoff.”

Price

The cost per meal (after the introductory week) was $9.79.

Customer Service

We did not interact with customer service.

Rating: 3.4

Ordering Process: 4 – Easy, straightforward.
Cooking Process: 3 – Some of the directions were convoluted, resulting in my making errors in cooking.
Food Taste: 4 – Nicely seasoned meals with a good mix of carbs and protein.
Price: 3 – After the introductory box, the meals ran about $9.79 per serving.
Sustainability: 3 – There was less returnable packaging than some other services.

Conclusion

We canceled “Hello Fresh,” but think we might return to them for future orders. They had a better price than some and better-tasting food than some other services.
